Spring is almost here and for many cheer teams, that means your season is over. You finally have time to hang out with friends, focus on your schoolwork, or catch up on the latest season of Pretty Little Liars. It’s a time of the year when there’s no cheer practice, no football games you have to rush to, and no late night practices before the big competition on Saturday morning. You can go home after school and do what (you think) every other student does‚ nothing. Okay, are you bored yet? Even though sitting around every day after school sounds appealing, it can get real old, real fast. Now is actually the time you can join other sports, take up a leadership role in a club you are involved in, or show off some of your other skills and talents. Staying active in your school doesn’t just mean being a cheerleader; diversifying your activities will help you learn new expertise and even peak new interests. Join a spring sports team. A lot of cheerleaders join track or tennis in order to stay in shape during the off-season. Before you know it, tryouts will be here for next season and you don’t want to be the one whose only muscle that was worked on was your thumb muscle on your TV remote. Get out and enjoy the great weather while making new friends, learning new skills. And perk: you get new swag for another sport besides cheerleading! Take on a leadership role. During football and basketball season, it is sometimes hard to take on a leadership role in your favorite school club or activity. Now is the time for you to be the head honcho. Is there an event that is happening in the final semester of school? You now have the free time to spearhead that event and get some great leadership experience under your belt. Spring is a time that many schools put on talent shows, dances, award shows, or theater productions. See if any of these clubs or organizations needs help. The more the merrier, right? Show off your hidden talents. Besides being an amazing flyer or standout tumbler, do you also love to act out your favorite play? Or maybe between practicing your motions and stretching for that perfect toe touch, you secretly also sing to yourself in the mirror. Joining choir or drama is a great way to show off your musical talents. And if you aren’t as musically in tune, there is always backstage work that is super fun. From costume designing to decorating the stage, drama clubs are always looking for an extra set of hands to help out during their busy show season. Still show your school spirit. Is there a big baseball game coming up, or a celebration for all of the senior softball players? Get your cheerleading team together and show off your school spirit! Just because you are not having official practices doesn’t mean you can’t grab your poms and throw your uniform on while you sit in the stands. Making posters and doing a few fun chants on the sidelines might be just what the players need to cheer them to victory! In what other ways can cheerleaders be involved in their school during the off-season? What have you done to remain busy? Tell us your story in the comments below!
