More Male Cheerleaders Than Ever at the School Level

For a long time, most male cheerleaders could only be found at the college and All Star levels. But that’s changing as more and more males are also cheering on their high school squads across the country. To gather more insight into the lives of male school cheerleaders, Idaho State Journal journalist Debbie Bryce spoke with twin brothers Luis and Carlos Hernandez, who are cheerleaders (and juniors) at Sugar Salem High School. The 17-year-old twins are two of the seven male cheerleaders on the 30-member team. While Luis has been a cheerleader since the eighth grade, Carlos joined the cheer world in high school. Regardless, both love the thrill of the stunts, cheers, and crowd reactions. “I get a thrill when I hit the shot,” Luis said, reported by the Idaho State Journal. Additionally, Carlos loves the teamwork aspect of cheer and both love representing their school. We hope that, as more males join cheerleading, the stereotypes that cheer is a female-only sport will be put to rest and any bullying against male cheerleaders will end. As the presence of male cheerleaders grows at the school and All Star level, more people will see how athletic and strong one has to be to be a cheerleader.
