As a cheerleader, you’re learning a variety of skills that will help you throughout life, in and outside of cheer. You’re learning how to work in a team, how to inspire, how to teach others, how to maintain busy schedules, how to organize events, and more! By utilizing these skills you can turn cheer into a career. Here are seven careers where you can put your skills to use: Cheer Coach Perhaps the most obvious, your skills make you qualified to become a coach. You know the ins and outs of cheer and you’ll be able to put yourself in your cheerleaders’ position when it comes to scheduling practices, choosing uniforms, planning camp, etc. Teacher You’ve learned the value of teamwork and you’ve helped teach other teammates routines. These are great basic qualifications to become a teacher! By understanding the power of positivity and high spirits, you can make a classroom a fun place to learn. The Next Maddie Gardner If you’ve recently read about Maddie Gardner, you’ll know she recently scored an endorsement deal with cheer company Chasse. Not only that, but she’s the host of the web show “Cheer Mashup” and travels around the country acting as a celebrity judge at competitions and attending events. By networking and making a name for yourself in the cheer world, you can make a career out of being a cheer superstar. Performer Even if you don’t become a professional cheerleader, cheerleaders have the tumbling skills, flexibility, and strength to transition into another performance arena, like dance, gymnastics, or a performer for Circque du Soleil (or another similar performing arts group or company). Cheer Entrepreneur Like Cindy Villareal, CEO of Cheer Channel Inc, Darlene Cavalier, founder of Science Cheerleader, or Jennifer and Scott of CheerNN you can become your own boss! These former cheerleaders went on to create their own thriving businesses. Villareal runs the beloved cheerleading network, Cheer Channel, which creates the hit shows “Secret Diary of an American Cheerleader” and “Cheer Mashup.” Cavalier created the organization Science Cheerleader to promote former and current cheerleaders in the science fields. Jennifer and Scott provide industry news with blogs, video and podcasts. Sports Medicine Doctor Former athletes can make the best sports medicine doctors! They’ve gone through the pain and the trauma that comes with having to miss games or competitions because of an injury. They can relate to athletes and know what they’re going through. Sportswear Designer You’ve worn the uniforms; you’ve performed in the shoes; you’ve carried the bags; you’ve practiced in the shorts and tanks. What better person to design sportswear than a former athlete? A great career option for a cheerleader is an apparel designer. You know what is comfortable (and what isn’t) and what styles and fabrics athletes like best. You could also come up with new innovative cheer uniform designs and styles. Do you know what you want to do after cheer? What are your plans or dreams for the future?
