5 Tips For Your Freshman Year On The Squad

by omni

Freshman year can be a big adjustment for cheerleaders. Classes are harder, cheer practices are longer and expectations are higher at an academic AND athletic performance level. It’s not all bad though, high school can be so much FUN! As a freshman on a new squad with new leaders, there are a few things you can do to make sure the good impression that got you on the team sticks: Keep your focus. There will be a lot of distractions…social events, boys, new friends, boys. Keep your focus on what you are doing, while you are doing it. That means shutting out any stress about homework, frustration about drama or googly eyes about puppy love while you are at practice. Your team is counting on you to be 100% present in the moment. Always be prepared. Figure out the best way to stay organized, and stick with it. There will be a lot going on, but you need to make sure that you never forget about a cheer practice, performance or event. Pack your cheer bag with all the essentials BEFORE an event so that you aren’t rushing – which could lead to you forgetting something important, like your performance uniform! Don’t be a brat. There may be times when your cheerleading squad’s leaders make calls that you don’t like, or when they tell you to do a routine over. Show that you have a good attitude by being cooperative. Don’t pout, don’t complain and don’t throw a fit. Remember that your Coach and Captain have the team’s best interest in mind, and you just simply don’t know everything that they do. Treat them with respect, and one day you might find yourself in a leadership role! Do be you. Just because you aren’t in a leadership position doesn’t mean you can’t be an amazing contribution to the team. Don’t let nerves overcome you and bog down your natural, bubbly personality. The team saw something in you that they liked, don’t forget that! Show up. Make team practices and events a priority. You made a commitment when you joined the team, and they are counting on you. Unless the situation is extreme, you should never miss practice or events. You may have to make some sacrifices, but your squad will be stronger with full participation. Also, most teams will have strict rules about how many absences you are allowed to have in a season. Don’t push your luck!
