Cheer Coaches: 5 Things to Look for at Tryouts

    by omni October 29, 2020
    written by omni

Spring is right around the corner, and, for cheer coaches, that means it’s almost time to select your new team, and choose your new uniforms. You may know what your goals are for your team, but how do you select the right cheerleaders to make them happen? Have you considered what things cheer coaches look for in their athletes?  If you find yourself stressing out about the upcoming months, here are five things to look for during tryouts to ensure you are on the right path for a successful season:

    Ability and technique.

The first things to look for during tryouts are ability and technique. Of course not everyone will be an experienced cheerleader, and some of your new additions will require more work than others. However, the skill level of your team as a whole will strongly affect your success throughout the year.

Cheer Parents, Help Your Cheerleader Stand Out & Shine

    by omni September 7, 2016
    by omni September 7, 2016

Even though you’re not on the
cheer squad with your daughter or son, there are many ways you can still help your cheerleader exceed and stand out as a great cheerleader. From preparation to participation, find out how to help your cheerleader shine!

    Understand the Commitment

Cheerleading is a big commitment. From practice to fundraising, games to competitions, a lot of time is spent with the squad. Make sure you and your cheerleader are
familiar with the year’s schedule and know how much time and travel is required. Get a copy of all schedules in advance so you can make any necessary arrangements to prepare for conflicts.

Don’t underestimate the commitment that your whole family will need to make, but don’t forget that it should be a fun experience for both you and your cheerleader!

    Be the Rock

Combining daily practices and homework requirements can put a lot of stress and pressure on your cheerleader, and also on you. She will need you to be a resource to help her balance her responsibilities and obligations. As with any athlete, there is always a risk of injury during practice or competition. If your daughter’s team stunts and tumbles, be sure that she
understands the risks, and the importance of staying healthy and focused.

Ensure her that you are always there for her. There will be both good and bad days and when she gets home from practice she may need to vent.

    Keep Up Your Attendance Record

Whether it’s a football game or competition, attend as many of your
cheerleader’s performances as possible. She needs your support! By showing up, you show your child that her interests are important to you and that you’re proud of her participation. Often times, your attendance can push your child to work harder to impress you.

    Cheer On Your Cheerleader

Support your cheerleader, win or lose (but especially during a loss). Your cheerleader already has a coach that critiques her skills and provides feedback. As a parent, your role is to be her supporter. Even after a loss, always find something positive to mention and congratulate her on.

    Don’t Let Her Quit

If your daughter signs up to be on the cheer squad, make sure she follows through on that promise. Even if a few weeks in she realizes that it’s not for her, it’s important for you to teach her that she has to hold up her commitments. After the season or year she doesn’t have to continue but she made
a promise to her squad and coach when she made the team. This is a great lesson that can be used throughout life.

    Encourage Her To Give 110%

At times throughout the year, your cheerleader may feel frustrated. Maybe she’s having trouble improving her toe touch; maybe she can’t quite do a correct needle. Whatever the problem, encourage her to continue practicing until she nails it. She’ll learn that she can’t give up in order to succeed. Try again and again!

What are your tips for cheer parents?

[VIDEO] Another “Shot” at the Incredible Half-Court Stunt

    by omni August 27, 2016
    by omni August 27, 2016

As if the first time wasn’t amazing enough.

You may have seen our previous post of a viral video of a
cheerleader making a basketball half-court trick shot. The incredible cheerleader that wowed the crowd at the William Carey
basketball game was Ashlee Arnau. The
jaw-dropping stunt seemed impossible to repeat.

However, a high school cheerleader has done just that. In nearby city Brooklyn, Mississippi, a Forrest County Agricultural High School cheerleader performed the very same shot. While lacking the audience and
cheer uniform Ashlee had, it was completed with the same amazing finesse.

Watch the video below to see the shot!

Uh, Oh! We’re Exposing What You Secretly Love About Cheerleading!

    by omni August 11, 2016
    by omni August 11, 2016

There are many awesome and exciting things about cheerleading that makes everyone stoked to participate. On the other hand, there are also a lot of mundane and even aggravating things that occur within the sport that most think less about. But, you love it. You love all of it, and usually keep quiet about it since most don’t agree with you or might question your point of view. Don’t worry, we won’t tell your team that you harbor a secret love for unusual cheer things. We will list them out for you, however, since you might not even realize you love these things as much as you do!

First and foremost, you really look forward to conditioning practice. You love it. Say what??! You are probably shaking your head right now, basking in denial, because you don’t think there is any way you even like conditioning days, let alone love them. Sure, conditioning day is hard and your coach seems to have a growing obsession with burpee drills, but you cannot deny what you secretly love about conditioning practice.

Speaking of the king and queens of conditioning day, you also secretly love your coach. Just to be clear: we do not mean you romantically love your coach, but you do love things ABOUT your coach that are pretty much priceless. Your coach has your back no matter what‚ even if you’ve gotten on their last nerve that day‚ and you owe them your whole cheer career. Don’t believe us? These perfect GIFs sum up the five things you secretly love about your cheer coach.

It’s not just your coach though; it’s your whole team that you care about. Moreover, you love team bonding, and any chance to do so! Because of this fact, you don’t mind the super long bus rides to and from cheer destinations that normally leave your teammates bored and tired. The wheels on the bus go round and round, and there are four things that you secretly love about traveling with your team as they do.

There are other types of team bonding that cannot happen on a travel bus, but happen in the moment when you perform. Your routines bind you with your teammates, and any flier would know there is no stronger trust than that between her and her bases group. New stunts can be dangerous endeavors, but it is ultimately worth it to show off the finished product to your audience‚ whether that be judges at a competition or fans at a home game. We know you secretly love learning new stunts, and this is why‚

And no stunt would be complete without a crisp, clean cheer uniform to go along with it! Your uniform shows to the world that you are, indeed, a cheerleader. You know that it’s required to wear, and sometimes it gets a little smelly when you don’t have time to wash it in between cheer duties. Sometimes it gets downright uncomfortable to wear when it’s made out of heavy material in the hot sunlight, but despite all of this, you love wearing your cheer uniform more than you think.

Do you secretly love other things about cheerleading that didn’t make the list? Did all of this sound way too familiar? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
