Being on a team with two people from the same family can be a challenge, but it can also bring a great dynamic and advantage to a cheerleading squad. Here are some tips for anyone that finds themselves on a team with siblings: Be patient. If this is the first time that siblings have been teammates, they might just need to adjust to spending extra time together and working together. Even if the siblings don’t get along very well, they will have to figure out to overcome that to be successful as teammates. Give them some time to work it out, and continue to help when you can. Be a family. Have you ever heard a cheerleader call their team “their family’? Of course you have because a team should feel like a family! When you have siblings on your team, try to embrace the fact that they will be experts at bringing that feeling to your cheerleading team. Learn from them! Don’t ignore your feelings. If you start to feel like the strong bond between sibling teammates leaves you left out, don’t ignore your feelings. Acknowledge that you feel that way, and come up with a creative way to deal with your feelings. One tip is to learn more about sibling bonds, so that you can understand where they are coming from, and also learn to separate and appreciate the ways that your relationship with each sibling will be unique. Speak up. If a sibling rivalry starts to distract the team or break the team’s unity, talk to your captain and/or coach about the situation. Siblings may be used to treating each other a certain way at home and in their free time and not realize that they need to adjust their everyday actions for the team. Simply asking a leader to step in and help could make all the difference for conflict resolution and save the team from drama that can be distracting. Share your own tips in our comments section!
