Should an Entire Squad Be Punished for One Member’s Actions?

This isn’t the first time it’s happened, but here we have another case of alleged bullying and its tough consequences. In Hawaii, an Oahu high school’s entire cheerleading program – both varsity and junior varsity squads – have been suspended while administrators investigate reports of cyberbullying (the act of bullying online via social media) by a few team members. The cheerleading program includes nearly 50 cheerleaders and while it is only believed a few members were involved in the bullying, the school isn’t taking this case lightly. They confirmed to local news that all cheerleading activities are suspended indefinitely until the investigation ends. During the investigation, all of the cheerleaders are being given training sessions about the dangers of cyberbullying. Many of the cheerleaders’ parents are speaking out, claiming the school is overreacting and have made a rash decision without any thought. Not only are the cheerleaders not allowed to practice or fundraise, they cannot even wear their cheer uniform at school. We’ve previously discussed the dangers of cyberbullying and, just earlier this fall, Towson made national headlines when it suspended its entire cheer squad because of a few members’ participation in hazing. This latest case shows adds another complicated element to the mix. When it comes to a team, we often believe that it’s a bit like a sisterhood or brotherhood: all for one and one for all. But, should an entire team be judged or reprimanded for the actions of a single team member’s actions? What about several team members? Or half the squad? If half the squad is involved, is it then fair to judge the entire squad as one? How should an administration decide when to draw the line?
