Myth Busted: All Cheerleaders are Miss Popular

by omni

It’s round two of cheerleading myths! First up to the plate is the myth that all cheerleaders are in the “popular crowd” at school. While this may not seem necessarily like a negative myth, it actually can be. In the media, the stereotype is that cheerleaders are popular and therefore mean to those that aren’t deemed “popular.” This is also associated with being judgmental, exclusive, and a bully. Additionally, the fact of the matter is, being on the cheer squad isn’t a popularity guarantee. Here’s why that myth is wrong: The Cheer Squad Isn’t Always Popular At some schools, the cheer squad isn’t the most popular group. Maybe the cheer squad has a bad reputation or is a small team at a large school. Think about big sports schools: chances are, a lot of other sports are the big popular groups, like the football team. Or, if your school is known for its tennis program, the tennis team might be most popular. At art schools, the drama group might be the big guys on campus. It all depends on the school you attend! Individuals are Popular, Not Entire Groups Being part of a popular group doesn’t guarantee that you, as an individual, will be popular. Think about it in these terms: maybe the school knows about the cheer squad and how great the team is, but they don’t know you individually. Some schools see the team as one unit, not a group of people that have their own tastes, styles, and personalities. Not All Cheerleaders Want to Be Popular The myth that cheerleaders are popular insinuates that cheerleaders want to be popular. That isn’t the case for everyone! Some people are shy or prefer to have a few close friends as opposed to a bunch of acquaintances. Some people prefer to study on their lunch break or enjoy staying home instead of going to parties. Just because someone is a cheerleader, doesn’t mean he or she wants to be popular or is trying to be popular. Popularity Doesn’t Always Equal Friends Keep in mind that being popular shouldn’t be your goal. Instead, focus on being kind and friendly to your peers. That will make you popular in a much better way. There’s a big different between being the “popular one” and being a great person that a lot of people like. Sometimes a person is popular only because they’re intimidating or have expensive clothes. That doesn’t mean they’re liked by everyone! Even if your cheer squad is the popular group at school, make sure you’re popular for the right reasons. On the other side of the spectrum, don’t think we’re saying that you’re shallow if you want to be popular. Most people want to be liked by others, it’s natural! The key is finding the balance and understanding the real definition of popularity. Don’t think you have to pick on the “dork” or make a joke about someone just to get people to like you or find you funny. Be a friend to others and others will be a friend to you. Is your squad considered popular at your school? Can you think of other ways to bust this myth?
