How To Survive (And Thrive!) As A Rookie Fundraiser

Cheerleading squads fundraise throughout the year to help cover the cost of uniforms and supplies, camp, competition fees, and more. While every squad is different, most fundraise year-round, especially in late spring before camp. Once you’ve made the squad, one of the first things you may do as a team is fundraise together! It will help your squad pay for camp, team uniforms, and more. Depending on your program fees and funding, the size and expectations of the fundraiser will vary. Your coach will outline all of the information you’ll need, including fees, fundraising goals, and what everyone’s individual responsibilities are. As a squad member, you’ll be helping the coach and your teammates plan and execute the fundraiser! Before you can start fundraising, you and your team need to first decide on a few basics, also known as the what, when, where, and why: What kind of fundraiser are you holding? When and for how long is your fundraiser happening? Where is your fundraiser taking place? Why are you fundraising (and for what will the funds cover? Once these questions have been answered, it’s time to plan. The most traditional way to fundraise is through sales, such as baked goods, candy and cheerleading accessories. However, many squads also host events, like car washes, parties, raffles or scratch-offs, performances, and more. Everyone will have responsibilities, whether they’re individual or group ones. Make sure you always follow through with your responsibilities on time! If one person slacks, the whole squad falls behind. Make sure you know all the fundraising details. Someone may ask you a question and you want to be able to give the right answer! Whether your fundraiser is an event or a sale, reach out to your friends and family! These are the most supportive people and are therefore the most likely to help out and contribute. Ask your parents to spread the word at their workplaces, gym, or neighborhood coffee shop. The more people that know, the more money you’ll raise. Whether your fundraiser is a door-to-door sale or an event, like a car wash, bake sale, or raffle, always wear your uniform, your warm-ups or item of clothing that relates to your school and/or squad. Remember to act professional; you’re representing your entire team! You want to build a positive reputation in the community. If you’re fundraiser is an event, don’t just arrive on time; get there early! There will be plenty to do and the more people there, the smoother everything will run. You may feel overwhelmed at first, but that’s to be expected for your first fundraiser. It gets easier over time and soon you’ll be a pro!
