In general, there are three styles of uniforms: classic, trendy, and a little bit of both. Classic uniforms are typically more basic, allowing the wearer to accessorize without easily going overboard or looking too busy. Trendy uniforms typically contain more details and possibly even patterns. These uniforms are best matched with simple cheer accessories that don’t distract from the uniform. While new trends will pop up every season or year, your uniform decision should first and foremost be based on your team and what works for them best. You want a uniform that feels good, is appropriate for the season, and allows you the full range of movement you need to do those cheers, stunts and moves that set your squad apart from the competition. Here are a few factors you should always consider when choosing a uniform style for your team: Age: Be sure to pick something that is appropriate for all members of your squad. If your squad includes younger cheerleaders, consider full-length tops and pleated skirts. Avoid materials that are too clingy or feature cut-outs. Uniforms that look too mature will be a distraction from your team’s performance. Fabric: If you have a hot and humid season, make sure that you look for a fabric that can breathe or look for shell tops that don’t require a long-sleeve bodyliner to be worn underneath. If you have a colder season, get a thicker fabric, like double knit, that will keep your team warm. Don’t forget to look for matching bodyliners and warm-up pants and jackets. If your team competes, get a separate uniform just for competitions. If you can only afford one uniform, make sure it’s one that can work for competitions. If your team is an All Star squad or takes competitions seriously, look for a uniform made with a “performance” fabric. This material is specifically engineered for athletes and will be lightweight and breathable, and will reduce moisture from sweat.
